How to Read a Creel Limit (and Not Get a Ticket)
A creel limit is the most fish of a species you can keep in a day. The words on a regulation page can be confusing, so here is what they mean.

The four terms you will see
Daily creel limit. The most fish of that species you may keep in one day. In some states this is a bag limit by species, and in some it is a combined limit for a group of species.
Possession limit. The most you may have with you at one time, which can be higher than the daily limit if you fish more than one day.
Minimum size. Fish shorter than this must go back. Measure from the tip of the snout to the end of the tail, using the method your state describes.
Slot limit. A protected size range. Fish inside the slot are released, and fish above or below it may be kept. Slots help protect the breeding fish.
Why limits differ
The same species can have different rules on different waters, even in the same state. Border lakes can be covered by two states, and some lakes have special regulations. That is why every MaxCreel lake page shows the limits for that lake, and why they are rechecked every year.
Before you go
Open the lake page on MaxCreel.com to see the limits and the nearest launches and bait shops, then confirm the current rules on your state wildlife agency's website. It takes two minutes and prevents most tickets.
Creel limits, seasons and rules change, and the state's current rules always control. Check your state's wildlife agency before you fish.
