Local tips

• Watch the surface temperature: salmon follow the cold-water edge, which can move miles overnight with the wind.
• Piers and breakwalls at almost every harbor give shore anglers a shot at perch, browns and fall salmon.
• Green Bay and Little Bay de Noc are separate walleye and smallmouth fisheries worth a trip of their own.
• Great Lakes conditions change fast. Wear a life jacket, check the marine forecast, and carry a VHF radio when you run offshore.
