Fall Turnover: What It Is and How to Fish It

Every fall the bite on many lakes seems to die for a week or two. That's usually turnover. Knowing what's happening under the surface helps you keep catching fish.

What turnover is

In summer, many lakes split into a warm upper layer and a cold, low-oxygen bottom layer. As fall cools the surface, the top water gets heavier and sinks, mixing the whole lake. The water can look murky and smell a bit off while it happens.

How it affects fish

Fish scatter and can be sluggish for a few days while the lake mixes. Once it settles, oxygen is spread evenly and fish can be almost anywhere, often chasing baitfish.

How to fish it

Try a lake or part of the lake that has already turned over or hasn't started. Shallow bays and rivers usually turn first. Fish slower and cover water until you find active fish, then work that depth.
