Biggest fish on record
- Missouri state-record brown trout: 40 lb 6 oz, caught Sept. 4, 2019 by Bill Babler of Blue Eye on Lake Taneycomo (confirmed by the Missouri Department of Conservation). It broke the 34 lb 10 oz brown caught on the same lake on Feb. 23, 2019 by Paul Crews of Neosho.
- Biologists estimated the 40-pounder at 8 to 9 years old.
Fishing this time of year (late October)
- Brown trout spawn in fall and are mostly nocturnal, so dusk, night and early morning fishing is often best. Look for them in faster water near the dam.
- Upper lake, dam to Fall Creek: flies and artificial lures only. Rainbow trout 12 to 20 inches must be released. Daily limit 4 trout, only 1 of them a brown, and browns must be 20 inches or longer.
- Below Fall Creek: natural bait is allowed and rainbows of any size can be kept within the 4-trout limit.
- Small flies work near the bottom: scuds over gravel in shallow water and zebra midges in the morning. A small marabou jig hopped off the bottom works in still water.
- When the dam is not generating the lake is calm and dark jig colors work; when Table Rock Dam is generating the water runs like a river and white jigs and heavier weight work better. Check the release schedule before you go.
- Trout feed in as little as 6 inches of water along gravel shorelines. Watch for swirls and fish the bank with an elk-hair caddis.
- Tips are from a Missouri newspaper report and the state regulations. Confirm current rules and flows before you fish.
Around the lake: food, fuel and lodging
Places were taken from OpenStreetMap map data and checked against business sites where they were available. Miles are from the nearest mapped part of the lake. Rockaway Beach, at the lower end of the lake, has many lakefront cabins that are thinly mapped, so use the search links. Call ahead for hours.

Local tips
- Upper 3 miles (dam to Fall Creek): flies and artificial lures only; scuds, sow bugs and soft hackles are popular
- Below Fall Creek, natural and scented baits and drift rigs work
- In fall, minimize fight time because of low dissolved oxygen
